Chocolate Cream Cheese Danish

The Chocolate Cream Cheese Danish uses crescent roll dough wrapped around a sweetened cream cheese and chopped dark chocolate filling. The dough is braided over the filling and baked until golden. Once cooled, the danish offers soft, flaky layers encasing a rich, creamy chocolate-cream cheese center, making it a sweet pastry suitable for breakfast or dessert.

Description

This recipe starts by combining softened cream cheese with sugar, flour, and vanilla for a smooth filling that balances sweetness and richness. The crescent roll dough is unrolled and reshaped into a rectangular sheet, with the filling spread in a central strip. Diagonal strips of dough are cut on both sides, then folded alternately over the filling to create a braided pattern, which holds the filling securely while creating flaky layers.

Baked at 375 degrees, the danish browns to a golden color with set filling. Cooling helps the structure firm before slicing. The chopped dark chocolate added to the filling imparts pockets of bittersweet contrast to the creamy cheese and tender dough.

This danish serves well as a morning pastry with coffee or as a sweet treat any time of day. It requires no icing, letting the chocolate-cream cheese flavor stand out.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tube crescent rolls
  • 8 oz. cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 oz. dark chocolate such as Scharffen Berger, semi sweet, chopped
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a small bowl, combine cream cheese, sugar, flour and vanilla. Set aside.
  2. Pop open crescent roll dough and unroll, leaving crescents in rectangles. On a piece of parchment paper {or an ungreased baking sheet}, unroll crescent dough being sure to not separate any of the triangular pieces. Press edges together and pinch any holes back together. Dough should be almost the entire length of a half sheet pan.
  3. Carefully spread cream cheese filling down the center of the dough to be about 2-3 inches wide. Sprinkle cream cheese filling with chopped chocolate. Cut 1 inch diagonal strips up each side of the dough. Fold slats of dough up over filling alternating sides to get a braided pattern. You may have excess dough once you reach the end of the danish, so fold them in as best as you can. Bake for 20 minutes or until filling is set and crescent dough is golden in color. Cool before removing from baking sheet.
  4. Once danish has cooled, remove to serving platter. In a small bowl, mix together powdered sugar, vanilla and cream to create icing. You may need to add more cream to get the desired consistency. Drizzle icing over danish.
  5. Cut into pieces and serve.
