Description
This frosting mixes softened butter and room temperature cream cheese with salt and vanilla extract until smooth. Cocoa powder and powdered sugar are then added gradually, carefully mixing and scraping the bowl to ensure full incorporation. The texture is thick yet spreadable, with the option to thin it with a bit of cream or milk for easier piping.

The frosting remains stable at room temperature for about two hours but should be refrigerated thereafter to maintain freshness. Its volume is sufficient to frost a standard layer cake or approximately 24 cupcakes.
Ingredients
- 12 Tbsp butter unsalted
- 16 ounces cream cheese
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup cocoa powder unsweetened
- 6 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Add the softened butter, room temperature cream cheese, salt, and vanilla, to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix until smooth.
- Add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, about 2 cups at a time, mixing in between additions. Take special care to thoroughly scrape down the sides of the bowl as you go.
- If your frosting is too stiff, add a bit of cream or milk to thin it down. You will want your frosting more on the thinner side for piping.
- Frosting can stay at room temperature for up to 2 hours, but should be refrigerated after that.
