Chocolate Magic Shell

Chocolate Magic Shell is a homemade ice cream topping made by melting a blend of semi-sweet and bittersweet chocolate chips with coconut oil to create a sauce that solidifies into a crispy shell when cooled. After melting and cooling slightly, it can be poured over ice cream to form a thin, hard chocolate coating that contrasts with creamy ice cream beneath. Stored at room temperature, it remains shelf-stable for convenience.

Description

This recipe combines equal amounts of semi-sweet and bittersweet chocolate chips melted gently with coconut oil to create a glossy, pourable mixture. Stirring off-heat ensures smoothness and preventing burning or graininess. As the mixture cools slightly but remains liquid, it can be drizzled over frozen desserts where it quickly hardens due to the coconut oil content forming a brittle shell.

The end product offers a satisfying crunch atop ice cream contrasting with smooth texture, along with rich chocolate flavor balanced by slight sweetness and bitterness from the mixed chocolates. The homemade approach avoids additives common in commercial magic shell products.

Stored in an airtight container at room temperature like a pantry, it keeps for about a month. If solidified, reheating gently in short bursts restores pourable consistency without degrading flavor or texture. This makes it easy to have on hand for finishing ice cream sundaes or similar treats.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 ounces chocolate chips we use Guittard, semi-sweet
  • 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate chips
  • cup coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Combine chocolate chips and coconut oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir frequently until the chocolate is almost melted. Remove from heat and stir until completely melted and smooth.
  2. Let cool for 10-20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes. When just barely warm, drizzle it over your favorite ice cream.

Notes

  • Keep chocolate magic shell stored in an airtight container at room temperature away from heat and light to maintain quality for up to 1 month.
  • If the magic shell hardens and becomes too thick to pour, warm it gently in the microwave in short bursts until liquid again.
