Chocolate Mice

Chocolate Mice are charming treats made by coating maraschino cherries in melted chocolate, then assembling them with chocolate kisses and peanut halves to form cute mouse shapes. The cherries serve as the body, while peanut halves create the ears, and a red-hot candy nose finishes the look. The chocolate coating provides a smooth, glossy covering that helps bind the components together. These whimsical confections offer a mix of fruity sweetness, chocolate richness, and a slight crunch from the peanuts, ideal for festive occasions or playful desserts.

Description

Chocolate Mice combine maraschino cherries dipped in melted chocolate with chocolate kisses and peanut halves to create small, mouse-inspired treats. The cherries are fully coated with chocolate and immediately pressed with a chocolate kiss to form the mouse's face. Peanut halves are wedged between the cherry and kiss to mimic ears. Small dots of white frosting serve as eyes, and a red-hot candy attached to the tip of the kiss acts as the nose. This process uses the chocolate's stickiness to hold the components together as it sets.

The texture balances the juicy, sweet cherry with the creamy chocolate and crunchy peanuts. The use of maraschino cherries with stems is important to handle the pieces easily during assembly. The recipe includes melted chocolate as a coating agent, which smooths over the cherry and helps affix the other elements.

These treats are especially suited to themed parties or holiday displays, adding a whimsical decorative element. They can be arranged on wax paper to set and maintain shape. The recipe requires some care during assembly to keep the pieces intact and to achieve the characteristic mouse look.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup chocolate candy melts milk or semi-sweet (You can also use chocolate chips with ½ teaspoon of shortening or coconut oil)
  • 20 maraschino cherries WITH stems (these are a little hard to find, but they are a must!)
  • 20 chocolate kisses Hershey's brand
  • 40 peanut halves unsalted
  • 20 red hots
  • decorating frosting I usually just buy a small squeeze tube from the grocery store cake aisle, white

Instructions

  1. In the microwave or over the stove, melt the chocolate. Stir until smooth.
  2. Holding a cherry by its stem, dip it into the chocolate. Place on a baking sheet covered with wax paper.
  3. Press a chocolate kiss on the front of the cherry. The wet chocolate will hold them together. Wedge peanut halves between the cherry and chocolate kiss to make the ears.
  4. Add a couple of dots of white frosting for the eyes, then put a little melted chocolate on a red-hot and place it on the end of the kiss to make the nose.

Notes

  • Use maraschino cherries with stems to facilitate dipping and assembly.
  • Attach the chocolate kiss to the wet chocolate-covered cherry immediately to ensure it sticks properly.
  • Use white decorating frosting to add small eye details precisely.
  • Work on wax paper or parchment to prevent sticking during setting.
  • Chocolate candy melts or chips can be used, but chips may require adding shortening or coconut oil for smooth melting.
