Chocolate Mug Cake
Description
Chocolate Mug Cake prepares a personal-sized chocolate cake using basic ingredients mixed and cooked directly in a mug. The batter includes all-purpose flour, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, milk, canola oil (or melted butter), and vanilla extract. Small chocolate chips are added for pockets of melting chocolate. The mug is microwaved just until the cake sets but stays tender inside, resulting in a warm, moist dessert ready in minutes.
The flavor combines rich cocoa with the creamy texture from the oil and milk, while the chocolate chips soften slightly but keep their chocolate intensity. The cake has a delicate crumb with a slightly shiny top that signals it is perfectly cooked. Resting after microwaving allows carryover heat to finish cooking the middle gently.
This recipe suits spontaneous cravings or when a single serving dessert is needed without heating a full oven. It can be customized with additions such as nuts, spices, or flavored chips. The straightforward preparation and minimal cleanup make it practical for quick indulgence or portion control.
Adjust the cooking time carefully since microwave power varies; undercooking keeps the center soft, while overcooking can dry out the edges. Variations can accommodate dietary needs by substituting milk types and sweeteners. Adding the flavorings or toppings before cooking or after allows some versatility.
Ingredients
- 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 Tbsp cocoa powder unsweetened
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- dash salt
- 3 tablespoons milk (any kind of milk)
- 1 tablespoons canola oil (or melted butter)
- 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tsp chocolate chips , or your favorite flavor baking chips
Instructions
- Spray the bottom of a microwave-safe mug or coffee cup lightly with cooking spray.Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt and stir together.
- Add milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract and stir until smooth, being sure to scrape the bottom of the mug. Stir in chocolate chips or sprinkle them on top.
- Cook in microwave for 70-90 seconds (see note) until cake is just set, but still barely shiny on top. (see notes below). Allow to rest in microwave for 1 minute before consuming.
Notes
- Start with 70 seconds of cooking time and add more in 15-second increments until the cake is set but still moist; microwave power varies greatly.
- Let the cake rest in the microwave for 1 minute after cooking to allow it to finish setting.
- Variations include adding nuts, coconut, cinnamon, flavored chocolate chips, or a small spoonful of Nutella or peanut butter for different tastes.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute plant-based milk, dairy-free butter or coconut oil, and dairy-free chocolate chips.
- Reduce sugar by half or use alternatives like honey or artificial sweeteners for a less sweet cake.
- Use white whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour for a slightly different texture and nutritional profile.
