Chocolate Orange Brownie Cookies

Chocolate Orange Brownie Cookies combine rich cocoa and melted semi-sweet chocolate with the bright zest of orange and chopped orange-flavored chocolate. The cookie batter is lightly mixed to preserve a tender crumb texture with moist pockets from the melted chocolate chunks. Baking at 325°F results in soft-centered cookies with deep chocolate flavor and a citrus lift. These cookies work well as a dessert or teatime treat for those who enjoy a fruity twist in their chocolate baked goods.

Description

Chocolate Orange Brownie Cookies feature a blend of dry ingredients including flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt mixed into a wet mixture of melted semi-sweet chocolate, butter, sugars, vanilla, eggs, and milk. The orange zest and chopped orange chocolate add a citrus component, enhancing the traditionally rich, dense brownie texture. Baking at a moderate temperature allows the cookies to develop a tender texture with pockets of gooey melted chocolate interspersed throughout.

The method involves careful melting of the chocolate and butter to create a smooth base, followed by beating in sugars and eggs for structure and sweetness. Dry ingredients are folded in just until combined to avoid toughening the final cookies. Chunky additions are folded in last and some can be reserved to decorate the tops after baking.

These cookies can be served alone or paired with a glass of milk or orange-infused beverages. Their unique orange chocolate addition makes them a suitable choice for those looking for a dessert that deviates slightly from plain chocolate brownies or cookies.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 and 1/2 tablespoons, be sure not to pack your flour
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 1 vanilla extract ½ teaspoon
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 2 egg large, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons milk whole
  • 7 ounces orange chocolate chopped; example brand: Lindt intense orange

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees (F). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper, lightly spray them with non-stick spray, and set aside.
  2. In a medium-sized bowl whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  3. In a large, microwave safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chopped chocolate and butter. Heat them in the microwave for 15 second increments, mixing in between each, until butter and chocolate are completely melted and can easily be whisked smooth. Whisk in the vanilla, then whisk in both sugars and orange zest. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in milk.
  4. Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, and stir to combine - be sure not to over mix here!
  5. Fold in the chopped orange chocolate, stirring until everything is just combined. (You may want to reserve a few pieces of the chopped orange chocolate to press onto the warm cookies right after they come out of the oven.)
  6. Scoop 1/4 cupfuls of the batter onto the prepared baking sheets. Bake one tray at a time, reducing the oven temperature to 300 degrees after you've put them in the oven.
  7. Bake for 16 to 19 minutes, or until the edges are set and the tops are dark and shiny. Press a few extra chocolate chunks on top of the warm cookies, if desired.
  8. Allow cookies to completely cool on the baking sheet before serving.
