Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups pecans about 8 ounces, plus some whole pecan halves for decorating the top, chopped
  • 1 inch pie crust unbaked
  • 1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips, 60% cocoa
  • 4 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 3/4 cup pure maple syrup or dark corn syrup
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar or light brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract pure
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 large egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Place a pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate. Tuck in any dough with your fingers and crimp the edges with your fingers or simply press with a fork. Poke the crust all over with the tines of a fork.
  2. In a large microwave-safe bowl or in a small pan over medium heat, gently melt the butter and chocolate chips together, stirring occasionally, until smooth.
  3. Allow the chocolate mixture to cool for about 2 minutes then whisk in the maple syrup and brown sugar; whisk just until combined. Crack in the eggs and add the cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt. Whisk until smooth and fully combined. Stir in the pecans and pour the filling into the pie crust. Arrange a few whole pecan halves in a circle pattern on top if desired.
  4. Bake for 45-50 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the filling is just set and a bit jiggly in the very center. After 20 minutes, I like to place a pie crust shield or aluminum foil on top to prevent too much browning.
  5. Remove from the oven and place the pan on the stovetop or a wire rack and let cool completely before serving.
