Chocolate Trifle
Description
The Chocolate Trifle recipe begins with preparing chocolate pudding either from a homemade recipe or a box mix. Separately, chocolate cake baked in a 9x13 pan is cut into small cubes. Heavy whipping cream is whipped with powdered sugar until stiff peaks form to create the topping.
Assembly involves layering cake cubes, pudding, crushed Heath candy pieces, and whipped cream in equal thirds. This layering is repeated three times in a trifle dish, creating a visually appealing and flavorful dessert with varied textures ranging from soft cake, smooth pudding, crunchy candy, and airy whipped cream.
The assembled trifle is refrigerated for 1-2 hours before serving, allowing for the layers to set properly. Variations can include substituting brownies for cake or using different candies like Oreos or peanut butter cups for the crunchy component. Using store-bought pudding offers convenience, while homemade pudding can deepen the chocolate flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 chocolate cake (baked in a 9x13 pan)
- 1 pint heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 3 cups chocolate pudding homemade or store-bought*
- 4-5 heath candy bars , crushed into small chunks
Instructions
- Prepare chocolate pudding: here's my homemade chocolate pudding recipe, or use a large box of instant chocolate pudding.
- Cut the baked chocolate cake into small cubes. (Use our homemade chocolate cake, or a cake mix, baked in a 9x13'' pan.)
- Whip Cream: Place whipping cream in a large mixing bowl. Beat with electric beaters for 1-2 minutes. Slowly add the powdered sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
- Assemble: Layer 1/3 of the cake cubes in the bottom of a trifle dish. Dollop 1/3 of the pudding mixture over the cake. Sprinkle 1/3 of the heath bar pieces over the pudding. Spread 1/3 of the whipped cream over the heath bars. Repeat with two more layers.
- Refrigerate trifle for 1-2 hours before serving.
Notes
- Instant chocolate pudding mix can be used for convenience following box instructions.
- Brownies can replace chocolate cake for a denser texture.
- Heath candy bars add crunch but can be substituted with chopped Oreos or Reese's peanut butter cups.
