Christmas Cookies in a Jar
Description
These Christmas Cookies in a Jar present all-dry ingredients measured and layered in a jar to maintain freshness and easy gift-giving. The jar includes flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, brown and granulated sugars, along with classic festive M&Ms and semi-sweet chocolate chips. The layering creates an attractive display and prevents ingredient shifting.
To bake, the recipient mixes the jar contents with butter, egg, and vanilla extract to form dough before baking at 350°F. This approach ensures freshly baked cookies with holiday colors and traditional flavors, encouraging a personal touch in preparation.
These jars can be prepared up to a week ahead, making them convenient for gift planning. The layering technique also helps protect the baking agents and sugars maintaining cookie quality until ready to bake.
Ingredients
- 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup light brown sugar firmly packed
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup M&Ms Christmas
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips semi-sweet
To be added by gift recipient:
- 10 Tablespoons butter softened, unsalted
- 1 egg large
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Spoon this mixture into the bottom of a quarter size (32 ounces) mason jar. Gently tap the jar against the counter to make the top of the mixture as level and possible.
- Layer the brown sugar on top into an even layer. Be careful when adding it to make smooth lines on the edges of the jar.
- Follow the same process with the granulated sugar.
- Then top with the M&Ms and chocolate chips. Make sure to fill the jar to the very top to ensure that the ingredients are packed tightly to prevent the ingredients from shifting when gifting them.
- Place the lid on the mason jar tightly. Print off a printable label (I prefer on yardstick) and attach the label to the jar with ribbon or baker’s twine.
- Then the jar is ready to give as a gift!
Instructions for the Gift Recipient:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Beat together the butter, egg and vanilla extract until combined and light and fluffy in a large mixing bowl.
- Stir in the jar ingredients by hand until well combined (no more lumps).
- Drop by rounded Tablespoons onto a baking sheet.
- Bake for 9-11 minutes until the edges are slightly browned.
- Cook for 5 minutes, move to a wire rack to cool completely and then they are ready to enjoy!
Notes
- Prepare jars up to one week ahead to allow easy gifting and storage.
- Ensure sugars and chips are firmly packed to keep layers distinct and prevent mixing during transport.
- Include clear baking instructions and required additional wet ingredients with the gift for ease of use.
