Christmas Crack

Christmas Crack is a sweet, crunchy treat made by layering salted saltine crackers with a caramel-like peanut butter syrup, baked briefly, then topped with melted chocolate chips and a sprinkle of chopped M&Ms. After cooling and freezing, it breaks into small, crisp pieces with a rich sweet-salty balance.

Description

In this Christmas Crack recipe, salted saltine crackers form the base layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. A sauce of brown sugar, butter, and peanut butter is heated to a boil and poured evenly over the crackers, which caramelizes slightly during a short bake at 400°F. The hot caramel layer clings to the crackers, providing a sticky, sweet foundation.

After baking, semi-sweet chocolate chips are sprinkled over the hot caramel and baked briefly to soften and melt, then spread to an even layer. Chopped M&Ms add color and additional sweetness atop the chocolate. Cooling the treat on the counter then freezing it ensures the layers harden properly and the candy breaks into bite-sized pieces with a crisp texture.

This no-fuss dessert pairs salty and sweet flavors with crunchy and smooth textures, making it a festive candy for holidays or anytime. Peanut butter is optional and can be omitted or replaced with nuts for different variations.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/4 pound saltine crackers about one sleeve, salted
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips semi-sweet
  • 1/2 cup M&M candies chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a 18x13 baking sheet with parchment paper. Place all of the saltines salt side up on the baking sheet in an even layer.
  2. Add the sugar, butter, and peanut butter to a medium sauce pan and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. When the mixture is fully boiling, stop stirring and allow to boil for three minutes.
  3. Carefully pour the boiling mixture over the crackers and put in the oven for five minutes.
  4. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with the chocolate chips. Return to the oven for 1 minute.
  5. Spread the chocolate chips out into an even layer and sprinkle the m&ms over the chocolate.
  6. Let cool on the counter for about 20 minutes. Place in the freezer for an hour and then break apart into small pieces.

Notes

  • Peanut butter can be omitted if preferred; it adds flavor but is not essential.
  • For a nutty variation, replace the M&Ms topping with chopped pecans.
