Christmas Crack Saltine Cracker Toffee
Description
Christmas Crack Saltine Cracker Toffee starts by lining a jelly roll pan with saltine crackers to form a crisp and slightly salty base. A mixture of butter and brown sugar is cooked on the stovetop to create a caramel that is poured evenly over the crackers and baked until it bubbles and thickens. Semi-sweet chocolate chips are sprinkled on top and allowed to melt evenly in the still-warm oven, which creates a smooth chocolate layer that complements the crunchy caramel and cracker base. Optional toppings such as M&Ms, nuts, or sprinkles add texture and festive appeal.
The flavor combines the distinct saltiness of the crackers with the rich sweetness of caramel and chocolate. The baking process ensures a firm toffee layer with an inviting crunch. This recipe lends itself well to customization with different toppings or variations of crackers and chocolate types to suit personal taste or occasion.
Once cooled and set, the toffee can be broken into pieces and served as a snack or dessert, particularly well suited to holiday celebrations or as a festive homemade treat. The combination of flavors and textures makes it an appealing choice for sharing with guests or gifting to friends and family.
Practical notes include ensuring the caramel is cooked just right to achieve the proper texture, and using parchment or foil to line the pan for easy removal. Variations such as using different crackers or chocolates allow for creative adaptations while maintaining the core crispy and sweet qualities.
Ingredients
- 36-48 saltine crackers enough to cover the entire jello roll pan
- 1 cup brown sugar packed
- 1 cup butter 2 sticks
- 2 cups chocolate chips semi-sweet
- 1 cup of optional toppings M&M's, nuts, sprinkles, etc.
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350F.
- Line a 10x15-inch jelly roll pan with parchment paper or line with aluminum foil
- Line the entire jello roll pan with saltine crackers placed in a single layer. (don’t worry if there is a little space left on the sides)
- In a small saucepan, add the butter and brown sugar and heat on the stovetop on medium heat, stirring frequently.
- Bring the mixture to a boil and continue stirring continuously for 3 minutes until it begins to darken and thicken
- Pour the hot butter/sugar mixture immediately over top of the saltine crackers on the jelly roll pan and spread evenly all over the crackers. (it’s ok if they are not perfect. it will continue to spread in the oven.
- Place the pan in the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes until the caramel is bubbling.
- Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over entire pan.
- Turn off the oven and place the pan back in for 5 minutes.
- Gently spread the melted chocolate chips to evenly cover the crackers.
- Sprinkle with seasonal toppings if desired.
- Let the pan cool to room temperature and then cover with foil and place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours but overnight is even better)
- Carefully crack the crackers into pieces (or use a knife to cut into desired size)
Notes
- Store finished toffee in an airtight container to maintain crispness for up to one week.
- Customize toppings with ingredients like holiday sprinkles, sea salt, chopped nuts, or coconut flakes.
- Consider substituting the saltine crackers with ritz crackers, graham crackers, or pretzel knots for a different texture and flavor.
- Try white chocolate or milk chocolate chips in place of semi-sweet chocolate for variety.
- For added depth, stir ½ teaspoon vanilla extract into the caramel mixture before pouring over the crackers.
