Christmas M&M Cookies

Christmas M&M Cookies feature a buttery dough blended with brown and white sugars, vanilla, and a combination of baking soda and baking powder for balanced rise and texture. The festive Christmas-colored M&M’s are folded into the dough and also pressed on top before baking, giving the cookies bursts of chocolate and color. Chilling the dough before baking helps the cookies hold their shape and enhances the flavor. Depending on baking time, the cookies can be soft with lightly golden edges or crisp throughout, making them versatile for different texture preferences.

Description

Christmas M&M Cookies combine a rich butter and sugar creamed base with eggs and vanilla to create a tender dough. The measured flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder ensure a well-balanced crumb and a good rise. The signature element is the Christmas-colored M&M’s, which are both mixed in and added on top of the dough balls before baking for a visually appealing finish and consistent chocolate bursts in every bite. The dough is scooped into 2-tablespoon balls and chilled either on a baking sheet or in the mixing bowl, allowing the flavors to meld and preventing spreading during baking.

Baking at 350°F, the cookies develop just-golden edges for a soft center if baked 11 to 13 minutes, or a firmer texture if baked longer. Adding extra M&M’s on top before baking helps them stick nicely to the surface and provides bright pops of color. These cookies work well for holiday gatherings or as a festive treat throughout the season.

Careful creaming of butter and sugars for a full three minutes is essential to achieve the correct texture and color. Chilling the dough is flexible: either scoop and chill the dough balls for about 30 minutes or chill the entire dough for at least two hours; longer chilling overnight can improve flavor and stability. Adding M&M’s onto the dough pieces right before baking ensures they adhere well and enhance the overall look.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup butter at room temperature (DO NOT MELT, unsalted
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 egg at room temperature
  • 2 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract pure
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour measured by scooping the flour and leveling with knife (366 grams or 12.9 ounces
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • cups M&M’s divided, Christmas colored

Instructions

  1. Cream together the butter and sugars in a mixer for 3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the eggs and vanilla, making sure to scrape down the sides of the mixing bowl.
  3. Add the flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder and mix on low until everything is incorporated. Fold in 1 ¾ cups of the M&M’s.
  4. Scoop out 2 tablespoons of dough, and transfer to a baking sheet, they can be closely spaced together as this is how they will chill.
  5. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes if they are scooped into balls. If you’re chilling the dough in the mixing bowl, chill for at least 2 hours.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  7. Place 12 of the cookie dough balls on a parchment lined baking sheet. Add a few M&M's on top of each cookie, making sure the M&M's stick into the dough.
  8. For cookies that are soft in the middle, bake for 11-13 minutes until just slightly golden around the edges. If you want them crisp, bake for 13-15 minutes. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before transferring them off the baking sheet and onto a cooling rack.

Notes

  • Cream butter and sugars thoroughly for at least 3 minutes until pale and light to ensure proper texture.
  • Measure flour by scooping and leveling with a knife instead of spooning for accurate quantity.
  • Chill dough either by scooping into balls and refrigerating for about an hour, or chilling the entire bowl of dough for two hours or overnight.
  • Press additional M&M’s onto dough balls before baking to keep them visible on the cookie surface.
