Christmas Peppermint Patties

Christmas Peppermint Patties are soft, colorful candy treats made from a peppermint-flavored cream cheese and butter mixture combined with confectioners' sugar. The dough is divided into sections tinted with red and green food coloring, shaped into ropes, cut into pieces, and rolled into balls. The patties are left to dry before serving, resulting in a subtly minty sweet ideal as holiday treats or gifts.

Description

This recipe blends softened cream cheese and salted butter with peppermint extract, then gradually incorporates powdered sugar to form a smooth dough. The dough is divided into four equal parts and each part is colored with red or green gel food coloring to achieve festive hues.

The colored doughs are rolled into long ropes, cut into equal pieces, and each piece is dusted and shaped into a ball. Optionally, patties are rolled in granulated sugar for texture. Pressing the center with a fork dipped in powdered sugar creates a subtle pattern similar to peanut butter cookies.

The patties are then left on a wax paper-lined sheet to dry for about two hours, allowing them to firm up. Once set, they should be stored chilled with layers separated by wax paper to prevent sticking.

These peppermint patties offer a creamy, mint-flavored candy with a smooth texture that can be served as a festive treat or given as homemade gifts during the holiday season. The colorful appearance matches traditional Christmas colors.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 (8 oz.) cream cheese softened
  • 4 tbsp butter softened, salted
  • 2 pounds confectioners' sugar plus additional for rolling
  • 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
  • red gel food coloring
  • Green Gel Food Coloring
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. With an electric mixer, cream together the cream cheese, butter and peppermint extract.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar. Mix on low speed just until combined.
  3. Dust a non-stick surface with additional powdered sugar.
  4. Divide evenly in 4 even pieces. Add a few drops of desired food coloring into each of the peppermint mixtures.
  5. Roll each color into a 20-inch rope. Cut into even 20 even pieces. Dust with additional powered sugar between batches to prevent sticking. Roll each cut piece into a ball then roll into the granulated (if desired). Press the center with a fork dipped in powdered sugar (like you would a peanut butter cookie).
  6. Leave on a wax paper lined baking sheet for 2 hours or until dry. Store chilled with wax paper between layers.
