Christmas Sugar Cookies

Christmas Sugar Cookies blend a tender, buttery dough with subtle vanilla and a gentle rise from baking powder to create soft, classic holiday treats. Rolled thin and cut into festive shapes, these cookies bake to a delicate golden edge, providing a slightly crisp exterior with a soft center. The accompanying icing, flavored with peppermint or vanilla and colorful food coloring, adds a sweet, smooth finish perfect for decorating. This recipe is ideal for those who enjoy traditional rolled cookies with customizable decorations for special occasions.

Description

Christmas Sugar Cookies feature a dough made with softened unsalted butter, granulated sugar, egg, and vanilla extract, balanced by baking powder and salt, blended into all-purpose flour. The dough is rolled out to a fourth-inch thickness and cut into shapes using cookie cutters to maximize usage. Baking is done at 350°F until lightly browned at the edges, indicating doneness. The icing combines powdered sugar, milk, and peppermint (or vanilla) extract, optionally colored for festive appeal.

The texture balances a tender crumb with a slightly crisp bottom edge from careful baking time management. The peppermint flavor in the icing can enhance the holiday feel, while vanilla offers a traditional sweet note. As a preparation, the dough can be rerolled efficiently to minimize waste, making this a practical recipe for holiday cookie sessions.

These cookies serve well as dessert, gifts, or holiday treats for gatherings, and decorating them with colored icing adds a personal touch. Handling the dough at room temperature aids in rolling and cutting for evenly sized cookies.

Ingredients

Servings

Cookies

  • 1 cup butter softened, unsalted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg room temperature, large
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

Icing

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3-4 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon peppermint extract or vanilla, pure
  • Food Coloring optional

Instructions

Make the Cookies

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Add softened butter and sugar to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Cream the butter and sugar on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  3. Add vanilla and egg. Continue mixing for another 3 minutes to combine well.
  4. Add baking powder and salt, and combine well. Then, add 1 cup of flour at a time, mixing until just combined and no flour streak remains.
  5. Lightly flour a clean surface and roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters, keeping each cut as close as possible to get the most out of each cut. Transfer cut-out cookies to the prepared baking sheets. Combine the scraps of dough and reroll to cut out more dough, continuing this step until all the dough is used.
  7. Bake for 7-9 minutes, depending on the size of the cookie cutter you use. Remove from the oven when the bottom edges start to brown lightly.
  8. Allow cookies to cool for 1 minute on the cookie sheet and transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Make the Icing

  1. Add powdered sugar, milk, and extract to a small bowl and mix until smooth.
  2. If coloring, divide into separate bowls and add food colors as desired. Add to a pastry bag or squeeze bottle.
  3. Pipe icing onto cookies and allow to air dry until set. If adding sprinkles or edible glitter, do so before setting.
