Churro Nutella Christmas Tree (Pastry Tree)
Description
This recipe uses semi-frozen puff pastry sheets cut into Christmas tree shapes, layered with Nutella spread in between. Slits cut along the sides allow twisting the dough strips for a braided, textured look. The twisted dough is baked until golden and crisp. Brushed with melted butter and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar after baking, the pastry develops a crunchy, churro-inspired coating that contrasts with its soft layers inside.
The Nutella filling offers a sweet, chocolaty element that balances the buttery pastry and cinnamon-sugar topping. The assembled tree pastry can be served warm and makes a visually impressive centerpiece for holiday celebrations.
The pastry is best enjoyed freshly baked but can be allowed to cool for a few minutes to set before serving. It pairs well with vanilla ice cream or extra Nutella for dipping, enhancing its indulgent character.
Ingredients
- 2 puff pastry sheets, semi-frozen
- 2 tablespoons Nutella
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon butter melted, unsalted
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar or 1 tablespoon sugar mixed with ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat mat.
- Cut out both puff pastry sheets in the shape of a Christmas tree. Evenly spread Nutella on one sheet of pastry. Place the other cut out sheet of puff pastry on top.
- Transfer to baking sheet. Cut slits on both sides spacing them about 1-inch apart (or about 2 cm), leaving the centre intact.
- Twist each strip of pastry twice, pressing the ends into the baking sheet. Cut out two star shapes with the leftover pastry, spread one with Nutella and place the other on top like a sandwich. Place the star on the top of the tree.
- Brush pastry with egg yolk mixed with a little water. Bake for 25-30 minutes at 400°F (200°C) until golden.
- Allow to cool for 5 minutes. Lightly brush pastry with the melted butter (you may not use it all), and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
Notes
- Serve the pastry with extra Nutella for dipping to enhance the chocolate hazelnut flavor experience.
- Pairs nicely with vanilla ice cream as a complementary dessert serving option.
- Work with semi-frozen puff pastry for easier cutting and handling of shapes and twists.
- Brush generously with melted butter before sprinkling cinnamon sugar to help it adhere and create a crispy coating.
