Cider Poached Pears

Cider Poached Pears use ripe green Anjou pears gently simmered in spiced apple cider. The mixture of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves flavors both the pears and the poaching liquid. The pears soften while retaining shape and are served warm with the aromatic cider spooned on top for a comforting fruit dessert.

Description

In this recipe, green Anjou pears are peeled and halved, with cores removed but stems left intact for presentation. The pears simmer gently in apple cider infused with ground cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves until tender, about 20-25 minutes. Flipping the pears halfway ensures even cooking and flavor absorption.

The process softens the pears to a delicate texture that still holds its form. The spiced cider infuses warmth and seasonal spice notes, creating a sweet yet lightly spiced dessert. Serving the pears warm with some of the poaching liquid highlights the aromatic, fruity sauce surrounding the fruit.

This dessert offers a light, elegant way to use fresh pears and cider, suitable for autumnal or winter menus. The spiced poaching liquid can also serve as a sauce for other desserts or breakfasts.

Check fruit ripeness when selecting pears; ripe but firm pears yield the best texture. Nutrition values are estimates.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 green anjou pears ripe
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves ground

Instructions

  1. Peel pears, and slice in half lengthwise.
  2. Leave the stems but remove the core.
  3. In a large, shallow skillet, bring apple cider and spices just to boil over medium heat.
  4. Add pears.
  5. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer pears until tender, about 20-25 minutes. I flip my pears over half way through.
  6. Serve pears warm with cider spooned over the top.

Notes

  • Choose ripe green Anjou pears that are firm yet fragrant for optimal texture after poaching.
  • Serve pears warm with some of the spiced cider to enhance flavor and moisture.
