Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 4 apple peeled, cored and sliced 1/4 inch thick, tart like Granny Smith
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup water cold
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add apple slices.
  3. Cook, stirring regularly, until apples are almost tender, about 6-7 minutes.
  4. Dissolve cornstarch in water; add to skillet. Stir to combine.
  5. Stir in brown sugar and cinnamon.
  6. Boil for 2 minutes, stirring regularly.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and any other desired flavorings.
  8. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Apples: I like to use tart Granny Smith apples in this recipe to help balance out the sweet cinnamon sauce. However, you can use any type of baking apple, like honeycrisp apples, gala apples, Fuji apples, or Pink lady apples.
  • Water: Try substituting cold apple juice or cider for stronger apple flavor.
  • Vanilla: Feel free to stir in a tablespoon or two of other flavorings such as fresh orange juice, brandy flavor, or any other desired flavoring.
