Cinnamon Chips Recipe

Cinnamon Chips are thin, crisp pieces made from a mixture of sugar, ground Saigon cinnamon, vegetable shortening, corn syrup, and vanilla baked until slightly melted. Once cooled and cut, these chips provide a crunchy cinnamon-flavored garnish or sweet snack.

Description

This recipe combines granulated sugar with fragrant Saigon cinnamon, vegetable shortening, light corn syrup, and vanilla extract to form a spreadable mixture. Pressed thinly onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, the mixture bakes at a low temperature until it melts slightly and sets with a firm texture.

The baking process creates thin, brittle pieces that can be cut into small chips after cooling. The chips have a sweet, intense cinnamon flavor with a slight chew from the corn syrup and a subtle richness from the shortening.

Cinnamon Chips made this way can be used as a topping for desserts, added to trail mixes, or eaten as a sweet snack. The recipe notes suggest doubling the batch and dividing it into smaller sections on the baking sheet for more even cooking.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar 136 grams
  • 3 tablespoons Saigon cinnamon 16 grams, ground
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening 25 grams
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup 46 grams
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 grams

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 225º Fahrenheit. Line a cookie sheet with a piece of parchment paper sprayed with cooking spray.
  2. Combine the sugar, cinnamon, shortening, corn syrup and vanilla in a medium size bowl. Use two forks to combine the mixture until it is well mixed.
  3. Pour the cinnamon mixture on the prepared sheet. Use the palms of your hands to press and flatten the mixture to be about 1/4" thick.
  4. Bake until cinnamon sugar mixture is melted slightly. This will take about 30-35 minutes, but watch it closely.
  5. Cool completely, and then cut into small pieces.

Notes

  • This recipe yields about 2 cups of cinnamon chips; doubling the recipe is common for larger batches.
  • If doubling, divide the mixture into two smaller sections on the baking sheet to ensure even baking.
  • Allow the baked mixture to cool completely before cutting into chips to prevent crumbling.
