Cinnamon Sugar Apple Puff Pastry
Description
The recipe starts by preheating the oven and preparing a cinnamon-sugar blend with sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. A thawed puff pastry sheet is brushed with an egg wash to promote browning and help the topping adhere. Cinnamon sugar is sprinkled over the dough before layering very thin apple slices in an arranged pattern guided by the pastry cuts for even coverage and presentation.
Baking at a high temperature allows the puff pastry to rise dramatically, becoming golden and crisp, while the apples soften slightly and caramelize with the cinnamon sugar topping. The finished pastry can be sliced into squares and served immediately, retaining the contrast between the crispy pastry edges and sweet, tender apples. Offering caramel sauce as a serving option complements the cinnamon and apple.
This dish works well as a light dessert or treat, showcasing the textures of flaky puff pastry and spiced fruit in a straightforward preparation.
Ingredients
- 1 puff pastry thawed, sheet
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg + 1 teaspoon water
- 1 apple very thinly sliced, large
- caramel if desired, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a bowl, stir together the sugar, cinnamon and salt.
- Place the puff pastry on the parchment paper. Whisk together the egg and water and brush it all over the puff pastry. Sprinkling a few tablespoons of the cinnamon sugar all over the puff pastry. Place the apples on top, in whatever decoration you would like. I used the cuts in the pastry as a guide to layer really thin apple slices. Sprinkle a little more of the cinnamon sugar over the apples.
- Bake the pastry for 25 minutes, or until golden and puffed. Remove it from the oven and cut into squares. Serve immediately. Serve with caramel sauce if you’d like!
