Cinnamon Twists
Description
The recipe begins by unrolling refrigerated pizza dough and cutting it into squares. Two squares are brushed with melted butter, sprinkled with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon, then topped with the remaining squares pressed together to seal the filling inside. The layered squares are sliced into strips, twisted multiple times to reveal the cinnamon sugar, and brushed with additional butter before baking.
Baking at 375 degrees F gives these twists a golden-brown exterior with slightly crisp edges and a soft, tender crumb inside. After baking, a glaze made from powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract is drizzled warm over the twists, adding a smooth sweetness that complements the spice.
These cinnamon twists are best served warm from the oven but can be stored airtight for several days. Leftovers can be refrigerated or frozen after flash freezing, with nuts or mini chocolate chips added prior to baking for variety and texture.
Ingredients
Twists
- 13.8 oz pizza crust refrigerated
Filling
- 4 Tbsp. butter melted, divided
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 2 tsp cinnamon
Drizzle
- 1/2 c. powdered sugar
- 1 Tbsp milk
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Unroll the pizza dough, cut into four even squares and place on a greased cookie sheet. Brush two of the squares with 3 Tbsp melted butter.
- Combine the sugar & cinnamon in a small bowl, reserve 1 Tbsp for topping at the end. Sprinkle the rest of the mixture over the two squares of buttered pizza dough. Top with the two non-buttered squares of dough. Press edges together.
- Cut each square into 6 strips and brush with the remaining 1 Tbsp of butter. Twist each strip a few times and place on cookie sheet. Sprinkle reserved cinnamon sugar mixture on top.
- Place baking sheet in preheated oven at 375 degrees F. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
- While twists are combine powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract in small bowl until smooth. Drizzle over warm twists and serve.
Notes
- These twists are best enjoyed warm from the oven for optimal texture and flavor.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container to keep them fresh for 1-2 days at room temperature or up to 7 days in the fridge.
- To freeze, flash freeze twists on a sheet pan before transferring to an airtight container; they keep 2-3 months when frozen.
- Consider adding chopped nuts or mini chocolate chips to the filling for extra flavor and texture.
- Using homemade pizza dough is a good option; scale the recipe accordingly if your dough makes multiple pizzas.
