Classic Ambrosia Salad

Classic Ambrosia Salad combines whipped topping and sour cream with mandarin oranges, pineapple tidbits, mini marshmallows, shredded coconut, and maraschino cherries. This chilled fruit salad offers a sweet, creamy texture with bursts of citrus and tropical flavor, commonly enjoyed as a refreshing side or dessert.

Description

The Classic Ambrosia Salad recipe starts with mixing sour cream and vanilla extract until smooth, then folding in thawed whipped topping for a light, creamy base. The salad incorporates canned mandarin oranges and pineapple tidbits, drained to avoid excess moisture, lending juicy citrus notes. Mini marshmallows add a soft, chewy texture contrast, while shredded sweetened coconut contributes a mild tropical sweetness. Maraschino cherries provide bright-colored bursts of sugary flavor. The salad can be enjoyed immediately but chilling it for a few hours blends the flavors and improves texture. The ingredient quantities can be adjusted to taste since canned fruit sizes vary.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces whipped topping thawed until it's easily spreadable, used Cool Whip brand
  • 1 (11 ounce) can mandarin orange drained
  • 1 (8 ounce) can pineapple tidbits drained
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • 1 cup coconut sweetened shredded
  • 1 cup maraschino cherries drained

Instructions

  1. Add the sour cream and vanilla extract to a large bowl and combine until smooth. Gently stir in the Cool Whip.
  2. Fold in the remaining ingredients (I used a spatula). You can eat it right away, but I recommend covering the bowl and chilling it for a few hours first to help the flavors meld.

Notes

  • You can vary the amounts of canned fruit and cherries; exact measurements are not critical.
  • Allowing the salad to chill before serving helps the flavors meld together.
