Classic Buttery Spritz Cookies Recipe
Description
The Classic Buttery Spritz Cookies Recipe centers on rich, softened butter combined with confectioners' sugar to create a smooth, light dough. Flavored with vanilla and almond extracts, the dough is pressed through a cookie press fitted with decorative discs, resulting in uniformly shaped cookies with crisp edges and a tender center. Baking at 375ºF for 6 to 8 minutes preserves the delicate texture. Once cooled, the cookies are dipped in a glaze made from confectioners' sugar and milk, then sprinkled with sugar for added sweetness and color.
The cookie press method produces intricately shaped cookies, but the recipe also includes options for shaping by hand or with cookie cutters, making it accessible without specialized tools. These small cookies are ideal for festive occasions due to their decorative appearance.
Storage tips include freezing both unbaked and baked cookies with or without glaze. Careful freezing and thawing help maintain texture and flavor over up to three months. The glaze should be fully dry before freezing glazed cookies, and thawing is recommended in the refrigerator.
Ingredients
Buttery Spritz Cookies
- 1 cup butter softened
- 1 egg
- 1 1/4 /4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1/2 /2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 1/2 /2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 /2 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 1/2 /2 cups all-purpose flour
Spritz Cookies Glaze
- 1 cup confectioners sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk or half and half
- sugar sprinkles for decoration
Instructions
Buttery Spritz Cookies
- Preheat oven to 375º F.
- Mix together butter and confectioner's sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add in egg, salt, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Gradually incorporate flour until well combined, taking care not to over mix.
- Place in a cookie press fitted with your choice of disc. Press cookies through cookie press onto baking sheet, leaving about 1 1/2 - 2 inches between each cookie. Bake for 6 to 8 minutes and then remove from the oven to cool completely.
Spritz Cookies Glaze
- Arrange a wire rack over a rimmed baking sheet. Whisk together confectioner's sugar and milk until well combined and smooth in a small bowl. Once cookies are cooled, dip each cookie into the glaze and place on the wire rack. Sprinkle with sugar sprinkles as desired and allow to dry completely.
Notes
- If you don't have a cookie press, shape the dough by hand: roll into balls and press down or use cookie cutters.
- Freeze unbaked cookies by placing them on a sheet in the freezer, then transfer to airtight containers; freeze up to 3 months.
- Baked cookies may be frozen before or after glazing; ensure glaze is fully dry prior to freezing after glazing.
- Thaw frozen baked cookies in the refrigerator before serving for best texture and flavor.
