Classic Spritz Cookie Recipe
Description
The Classic Spritz Cookie Recipe combines butter, sugar, egg, vanilla, almond extract, and all-purpose flour to produce a smooth dough suitable for using with a cookie press. The almond extract gives the cookies a subtle nutty brightness that complements the rich buttery base. The dough is carefully mixed to incorporate air and achieve a tender texture.
Shaped with a cookie press directly onto ungreased sheets, cookies are spaced about 2 inches apart to maintain their shape during the short baking time of 6 to 9 minutes. They’re taken out once set but not browned, preserving a delicate crumb and gentle bite. Optional sprinkles and food coloring add visual interest without affecting texture.
These cookies are ideal for occasions requiring pretty, uniform cookies that store well and pair nicely with coffee or tea. Following the temperature and flour measuring guidance helps prevent dough that is too soft or dry, ensuring clean pressing and even baking.
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter at cool room temperature
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg large
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract
- 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour sifted
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- Sprinkles optional
- Food Coloring optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375F.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together for about 3 minutes, or until well-combined, on medium.
- Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Mix in until combined.
- Stir in the flour and salt until just combined.
- Add the decorative plate to the cookie press according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Add the dough to the cookie press.
- Press the cookie press down onto the ungreased cookie sheet as you press out the dough about 2-inches apart.
- Add sprinkles, if desired.
- Bake for about 6-9 minutes, or until the cookies are set but not browned.
- Let the cookies sit for 5 minutes, and then transfer to a wire cooling rack to finish cooling.
Notes
- Use butter at cool room temperature, around 68-70°F, so it’s soft but retains shape.
- If almond extract is unavailable or undesired, substitute with extra vanilla extract.
- For accurate flour measurement, weigh it or sift and spoon into measuring cups rather than scooping.
- Cookie size and shape affect yield, so shapes pressed may alter total count.
- Check cookies early in baking to avoid browning and ensure tender texture.
