Coffee Frosting
Description
This Coffee Frosting starts by dissolving instant coffee in hot water and cooling it completely. Meanwhile, softened unsalted butter is beaten until creamy, then powdered sugar is incrementally mixed in to avoid lumps. Vanilla extract and salt are added for balance. The cooled coffee mixture is drizzled in gradually while blending, leading to a smooth frosting.
The finished frosting is thick but spreadable and can be piped for decorative use. Adding cocoa powder creates a mocha twist. It’s ideal for topping cupcakes, sheet cakes, or layered cakes, providing a pronounced coffee flavor with balanced sweetness.
Practical advice includes storage in an airtight container for up to five days in the refrigerator, softening before reuse. The frosting stays stable at room temperature for a couple of days after decoration. Measuring yields around 2 ½ cups, suitable for a dozen cupcakes or a 13x9 inch cake.
Ingredients
- 2 Tablespoons instant coffee
- 2 Tablespoons water very hot
- 1 cup butter softened, unsalted
- 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ⅛ teaspoon table salt
Instructions
- Place instant coffee in a measuring cup and pour hot or steaming water overtop. Whisk until smooth. Allow to cool completely before proceeding (may pop it in the fridge to speed up the process).
- Place butter in a large mixing bowl and use an electric mixer to beat until smooth and creamy.
- With mixer on low-speed, gradually add powdered sugar and stir until completely combined. Stir in vanilla extract and salt.
- Gradually drizzle in cooled coffee mixture, while stirring. Stir until completely combined. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl to ensure ingredients are well incorporated.
- Spread or pipe as desired.
Notes
- For mocha flavor, add 3 tablespoons cocoa powder with the powdered sugar.
- Recipe makes about 2 ½ cups, enough for 12 cupcakes or a 13x9 inch cake.
- Stable at room temperature for up to 2 days once piped or spread.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 5 days; soften at room temperature before using again.
