Coffee Smoothie Recipe

This Coffee Smoothie combines brewed coffee, almond milk, dates, hemp hearts, and almond butter for a creamy and naturally sweet drink. Blended with ice cubes, it achieves a slushy texture with a rich coffee flavor and subtle nutty undertones, ideal for a refreshing and energizing treat.

Description

The Coffee Smoothie Recipe blends cooled brewed coffee with almond milk, pitted Medjool dates, hemp hearts, and almond butter to form a smooth, creamy base. The natural sweetness comes from the dates, which also add richness without refined sugar.

Adding ice cubes and blending again creates a thick, slushy texture. The nutty notes from almond butter and hemp hearts complement the robust coffee flavor, while the almond milk provides a smooth mouthfeel.

This smoothie works well as a breakfast drink or afternoon pick-me-up. For a stronger coffee taste, freezing leftover coffee into ice cubes for blending enhances the flavor without diluting the texture.

Using soft dates is preferable; soaking dry dates can soften them before blending. Alternative sweeteners like frozen banana and maple syrup can be used but will adjust the flavor slightly.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ½ cup brewed coffee , cooled
  • ½ cup almond milk (or any milk)
  • 3 Medjool dates , pitted (see notes)
  • 1 tablespoon hemp hearts
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • 1 cup ice cubes , or more as needed

Instructions

  1. In a high-speed blender, combine the coffee, milk, pitted dates, hemp hearts, and almond butter. Blend until very smooth. Taste the mixture, and add an extra date if you'd like it to be sweeter.
  2. Add the ice cubes and blend again, until the smoothie has a slushy texture. Serve right away for the best consistency. Tip: For extra coffee flavor, pour leftover coffee into an ice cube tray and freeze overnight. Then use the frozen coffee cubes instead of regular ice cubes to boost the coffee taste.

Notes

  • Use soft, pitted dates for easy blending; soak dry dates in hot water for 10-15 minutes if needed.
  • For stronger coffee flavor, freeze brewed coffee into ice cube trays and use these instead of regular ice cubes.
  • This recipe was updated in February 2024 to add extra milk for creaminess; omit milk to follow the original version.
  • Replace dates with one frozen banana and a tablespoon of maple syrup as a sweetener alternative, which adds a hint of banana flavor.
