Corn on the Cob in the Microwave

This method prepares corn on the cob quickly by steaming it inside its husk using a microwave. Cooking the corn with the husk intact keeps the kernels moist and tender while preventing drying out. The husk and silk are easy to remove after microwaving, revealing warm, ready-to-eat corn that requires minimal cleanup and no boiling water.

Description

Corn on the Cob in the Microwave is a straightforward technique that uses the natural husk as a steaming wrapper. By microwaving medium-sized ears of corn with their husks on, the heat builds steam inside, gently cooking the kernels. The method takes about five minutes, depending on your microwave power, making it a convenient option when you want corn without boiling or grilling.

After microwaving, the corn will be hot, so using tongs or a cloth is recommended for handling. Cutting the stem end slightly makes it easy to peel off the husk and silky strands, which slide away smoothly due to the steaming effect. This leaves tender, juicy corn ready to be enjoyed simply or with butter and seasoning.

Adjusting cooking time based on the number of ears and microwave wattage helps achieve optimal tenderness. This technique is practical for quick corn servings and reduces water use compared to boiling.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 corn husk on, medium ear

Instructions

  1. Don't remove the husk of the corn.
  2. Place the cobs in the microwave and cook on a high setting for 5 minutes.
  3. Remove the ears of corn from the microwave. (They will be hot, so use tongs or a clean tea towel to protect your hands.)
  4. Place the corn on a chopping board.
  5. Use a sharp knife to cut the stem end of the corn off about ½ inch/1.5cm from the bottom.
  6. Use a cloth to protect you from the heat, slide off the husk and the silks. They should glide off easily.

Notes

  • Cooking more than two ears requires adding about two minutes per additional ear in the microwave.
  • Microwave power varies; adjust cooking time accordingly to ensure corn is tender but not overcooked.
