Cottage Pie (British Beef and Mashed Potato Recipe)

Cottage Pie is a layered dish featuring a savory ground beef filling with onions and rich gravy, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and optionally cheddar cheese. The filling is cooked with beef bouillon, Worcestershire sauce, and gravy mix to develop a deep, hearty flavor. Baking the pie creates a golden crust on the potato top.

Description

This British Cottage Pie starts with sautéed onions until translucent, followed by ground beef cooked until browned and reduced of juices. The mixture is simmered with water and seasoned with beef bouillon, Worcestershire sauce, gravy mix, salt, and pepper to create a thick, flavorful meat filling.

The topping consists of mashed potatoes made from boiled potatoes blended with butter, milk or cream, and salt. The mashed potatoes are spread over the meat filling in individual ramekins or one larger dish. Optionally, shredded cheddar cheese can be sprinkled on top for added richness and a melted cheesy crust after baking.

Baked at 375°F (190°C) on a rimmed baking sheet, the pie heats through and forms a browned, textured top. The dish offers a comforting contrast between the tender, savory meat beneath and the creamy mashed potato layer.

Serving notes advise caution when serving in ramekins as they remain hot, particularly for children. Letting the meat cool slightly can make adding the potato topping easier without losing warmth.

Ingredients

Servings

Meat Filling:

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 1 tsp beef bouillon or one OXO beef bouillon cube, brand Better than Bouillon, beef flavor
  • 1 Tbsp gravy mix Bisto brand
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ tsp salt to taste, sea salt
  • tsp black pepper to taste

Potato Topping:

  • 5 large potato
  • ½ tsp salt to taste
  • 2 oz butter as desired
  • ¼ cup milk and/or cream as desired
  • cheddar cheese optional, shredded

Instructions

  1. Sauté the diced onion over medium high heat, stirring occasionally, until translucent.
  2. When the onion is just starting to brown, add the ground beef and break up into smaller pieces. Stir often, and continue to cook until the liquid starts to dry (if not using Bisto, add a tablespoon of flour at this time).
  3. Add enough water, just to cover the ingredients, and simmer. At this point, add about salt, one OXO cube (or 1 tsp Beef Better than Bouillon), Bisto granules, Worcestershire Sauce, and some ground black pepper to taste.
  4. Preheat oven to 375ºF (190ºC).
  5. Continue to simmer the meat over medium heat for about 5-10 minutes, then taste. Add more salt if needed, then remove from heat.
  6. Ladle the beef and gravy into oven safe ramekins or bowls to make individual cottage pies, or just one large dish. Spoon (or pipe) mashed potatoes onto each dish to cover completely. Add shredded Cheddar cheese on top, if desired.
  7. Place dishes/ramekins onto a rimmed baking sheet and bake until bubbly and the potato is a little browned, approximately 25-30 minutes. You can finish off the pies under the broiler if you like them to have more crispy, and brown tops.

Notes

  • Serve hot and handle ramekins carefully as they will be very hot.
  • To make topping easier to apply, allow the meat filling to cool slightly before adding mashed potatoes.
