Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe

Cream Cheese Frosting is a smooth, thick icing combining softened butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. It yields a creamy texture with a balanced sweetness perfect for cakes and cupcakes. The ingredients are mixed until smooth and whipped to incorporate air gently without overbeating.

Description

This Cream Cheese Frosting recipe uses softened butter and cream cheese combined with powdered sugar and vanilla extract. The mixture is whipped slowly at first to blend the ingredients until smooth and thick, then mixed again on medium speed briefly to achieve a light, creamy consistency. The frosting maintains a balance between sweetness and tanginess characteristic of cream cheese, making it ideal for spreading or piping on cakes, cupcakes, and other baked goods.

The recipe yields enough frosting to cover 24 cupcakes, two 8- or 9-inch round cakes, or one 9x13-inch cake. Ensuring both the butter and cream cheese are at room temperature helps the frosting blend evenly and avoid lumps. The frosting's texture is stable enough for decorative use but soft enough to spread easily.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup butter at room temperature, salted
  • 8 ounces cream cheese at room temperature
  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Place very soft butter and a very soft cream cheese into the bottom of a large bowl.
  2. On top of that, pour powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
  3. Use an electric mixer or stand mixer with the whisk attachment and mix it all together on low speed until completely smooth and thick. At first, it might seem like the powdered sugar won't all mix in, but as you stir and work it together with the hand mixer, it will surely come together.
  4. Scrape the sides of the bowl, increase to medium speed if desired and mix again briefly to make sure it's fully smooth.
  5. Use as desired.

Notes

  • This recipe yields enough frosting for 24 cupcakes, two 8- or 9-inch round cakes, or one 9x13-inch sheet cake.
