Cream Cheese Icing

Cream Cheese Icing blends softened cream cheese with powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk, creating a smooth, creamy frosting. The texture can be adjusted by varying the milk amount, making it suitable for spreading or drizzling over baked goods like cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, or cakes.

Description

This Cream Cheese Icing features softened cream cheese whipped with powdered sugar, gently incorporating vanilla extract and milk to achieve the desired consistency. Starting the mixing on low speed prevents sugar dust from scattering and incorporates air for a light texture. The balance of sweetness and tanginess from the cream cheese defines the flavor.

The icing’s thickness is customizable by gradually adding milk, allowing it to be spread thickly or drizzled thinly. It complements a variety of desserts such as cinnamon rolls, cakes, cupcakes, and pancakes.

Storage recommendations include refrigerating the icing in a sealed container for up to a week. Variations can be made by adding flavors like strawberry or swapping vanilla with other extracts such as maple or lemon to tailor the icing to your preference.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 oz. cream cheese softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar 260g
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 5g, pure
  • 1 tablespoon milk 17g
  • kosher salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Add the softened cream cheese to a large bowl.
  2. Use a hand mixer to beat the cream cheese, starting slowly so it doesn't splatter. We do this to add air to the cream cheese from the get-go and make the blending easier.
  3. Sprinkle in the powdered sugar, and beat until combined with the cream cheese. (Be sure to start the mixer on low so that the powdered sugar doesn't fly everywhere.)
  4. Pour in the vanilla, and mix to combine.
  5. Drizzle the milk into the icing slowly, running the hand mixer at the same time. We don't want the icing to become runny, though you might like yours thicker or thinner depending on your personal tastes.
  6. Add milk until the icing is the correct consistency.
  7. Spread the icing on top of your dessert or breakfast of choice. (It works great for cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, cake, pancakes and more!)

Notes

  • Adjust the milk to achieve your preferred consistency, adding more for a drizzle effect.
  • Double the recipe to frost larger batches or a crowd.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Experiment with flavor variations by adding fruit or different extracts.
