Cream Puff Cake Recipe

Cream Puff Cake features a baked choux pastry crust topped with a smooth filling of cream cheese and instant vanilla pudding blended with milk and whipped topping. The dessert is set chilled and finished with chocolate syrup or white chocolate curls for a decorative touch. It yields a light, creamy texture atop a soft, risen pastry base.

Description

The crust starts by boiling butter and water, then adding flour until the dough forms a ball. After cooling slightly, eggs are added one at a time to create a smooth choux dough, which is spread into a baking dish and baked until puffed and golden. The pastry rises substantially along the dish edges, forming a light base.

The filling blends softened cream cheese whipped smooth, stirred into vanilla pudding mix prepared with milk, then combined with whipped topping to create a creamy mousse-like consistency. This filling is poured into the cooled pastry crust and spread evenly.

The cake is chilled for at least an hour before serving, allowing flavors to meld and the texture to firm. Finishing touches include drizzling chocolate syrup or garnishing with white chocolate curls. The cake can be prepared ahead by making crust and filling separately, storing appropriately before assembly.

Make the crust and filling up to 24 hours ahead; store crust covered at room temperature and filling refrigerated.Assemble just before serving by spreading filling on crust and topping with whipped cream.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ½ cup butter unsalted
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 egg
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese softened
  • 2 (3.4-ounce) boxes instant vanilla pudding or white chocolate pudding
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 (8-ounce) tub whipped topping or 2 cups whipped cream
  • chocolate syrup or white chocolate curls

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Combine butter and water in a large pot and bring to a boil over high heat.
  3. Reduce the heat to low, add flour and stir until mixture forms a ball. Remove from the heat.
  4. Cool dough slightly, then beat in eggs one at a time, mixing between each addition. After adding the last egg, the dough will come together and will be smooth. Spread into a greased 9x13-inch baking ish.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes, then cool completely. (NOTE: The dough should rise up the sides of the dish during baking).
  6. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth.
  7. In a separate bowl, whisk pudding mix and milk together until smooth. Add whipped cream cheese and beat until combined and smooth. Pour into the crust.
  8. Spread whipped cream on top of pudding and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving.
  9. Serve drizzled with chocolate syrup or topped with white chocolate curls.

Notes

  • The crust and filling can be prepared a day in advance for convenience.
  • Store the crust covered at room temperature and keep the filling refrigerated until ready to assemble.
  • Assemble the cake by adding filling to the cooled crust and topping with whipped cream just before serving.
