Creamy Hot Chocolate Mix
Description
The recipe starts by grinding semisweet chocolate to a fine consistency, then mixing it thoroughly with whole milk powder, confectioners sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla powder, cornstarch, and salt to create a uniform cocoa mix. The cornstarch helps thicken the drink when heated, contributing to its creamy texture.
To prepare a cup of hot chocolate, 3 to 4 tablespoons of the mix are combined with hot water or milk and gently heated while whisking until the mixture is smooth, steamy, and creamy. This method yields a comforting and rich hot beverage with balanced sweetness and texture, enhanced optionally by whipped cream or shaved chocolate toppings.
The dry mix can be stored in an airtight container for up to one year. It makes about four cups of mix, roughly sixteen servings, making it convenient to prepare hot chocolate quickly at home. The mix can be customized with spirits such as peppermint schnapps, Baileys Irish Cream, or other flavored liqueurs for variation.
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cup milk powder (I used whole milk powder, but you can also use nonfat)
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chopped
- 3/4 cup confectioners sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 2 Tbsp vanilla powder (optional)
- 2 Tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
- Add the chopped chocolate to the bowl of a food processor, and pulse until finely ground.
- Add the rest of the ingredients and process to combine. You can also do this in a large mixing bowl: add the ground chocolate along with the rest of the ingredients and mix to combine.
- Keep cocoa mix in an airtight container until ready to use. It will keep in the cupboard up to a year.
To Make Hot Chocolate
- To make hot chocolate, use 3-4 Tbsp of hot chocolate mix for each cup of water. (You can also use milk.)
- Heat slowly in a saucepan, whisking to get everything dissolved. Heat until it gets steamy hot and is smooth and creamy. Enjoy with whipped cream and shaved chocolate, if desired.
Notes
- The dry mix yields about 4 cups or 16 servings and can be stored in an airtight container for up to one year.
- For an adult twist, add 1-2 tablespoons of spirits like peppermint schnapps, Baileys Irish Cream, Kahlúa, or bourbon to each serving.
- Use 3-4 tablespoons of the mix per cup of hot water or milk, heating gently while whisking for best results.
