Creamy Pearl Onions - An Easy Side

If you are looking for easy and unique side dishes, then these creamy pearl onions will fit the bill. Lightly caramalized pearl onions in cream sauce, flavoured with thyme and black pepper, this vegetarian side dish is great with roasted turkey, glazed ham or roast beef. The onions are cooked on the stovetop freeing space in the oven. Perfect as a Thanksgiving side or on your Christmas dinner table. Plus get my top tip for how to easily peel pearl onions.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 14.4 oz pearl onion frozen or fresh
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ½ cup vegetable broth low sodium
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • ½ teaspoon thyme leaves
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

If using frozen onions allow the onions to thaw and drain.

If using fresh onions start by peeling them:

  1. Set a pan of boiling water on the stovetop and prepare a large bowl of cold water and ice.
  2. Slice the ends off the onions and then drop them into the boiling water for 45 seconds.
  3. Use a slotted spoon to transfer then to the ice water, to instantly stop the cooking.
  4. After the onions are cool you should be able to just slide the papery skins off!

To cook the creamy onions.

  1. Place a large skillet over a medium high heat and add the oil and butter.
  2. Add the peeled onions and cook for 3-4 minutes until slightly browned.
  3. Add the vegetable broth and thyme.
  4. Bring to a simmer, lower the heat and then cook for 10 minutes until the onions are soft but still holding their shape.
  5. Add the cream and a generous pinch of salt and pepper, bring back to a simmer and cook or 5 minutes until the mixture has thickened.
  6. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve.

Notes

  • These onions heat up fabulously, they do lose some shape but they taste great the next day.
