Creamy Sausage Baked Ziti features al dente ziti pasta combined with crumbled sweet Italian sausage cooked in a skillet until browned. Onions, fresh sage, and nutmeg are sautéed, then heavy cream is added to create a luxurious sauce. The pasta and sausage are combined in the cream mixture, then transferred into a butter-greased baking dish. Toppings include shredded mozzarella and a Parmesan cheese combined with bread crumbs mixture, which creates a golden crust when baked. The dish is baked at 400°F until hot and bubbly.

  • 1 pound ziti pasta 453 g
  • 1 pound Italian sausage sweet
  • 1 teaspoon sage finely chopped, fresh
  • ½ white onion chopped, or yellow onion
  • 1 cup Parmigiano Cheese freshly grated
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups heavy cream + 1/4 for pouring on top
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1 tablespoon parsley fresh chopped, for topping
  • butter for greasing pan

Instructions

  1.  Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Grease a 9x13 in glass or oven safe pan with butter, set aside. In a small glass bowl combine parmigiano cheese and bread crumbs, stir to combine and set aside.
  3. Bring a large pot of salted water to boil.
  4. While waiting for the water to boil, cook the Italian sausage in a large skillet oven over medium-high heat until crumbly, browned, and no longer pink, 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. Drain and set aside. In the same pan, on medium heat, stir in the onions, nutmeg, and sage; cook until onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Turn off heat and add cream. Stir to combine.
  6.  Add pasta to boiling water and cook until al dente directions. Reserve 1/4 cup pasta water. Add hot pasta and reserved pasta water to skillet with creamy sausage. Stir to combine.
  7. Add the creamy sausage ziti to the prepared baking dish and top shredded mozzarella and the parmigiano and bread crumb mixture. Pour the remaining 1/4 cup  cream evenly over the top.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and bubbly. Let rest for 5-10 minutes before cutting. Sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving.  Mangia! (Eat!)
