Crispy Baked Tortilla Bowls

This recipe produces crispy, golden baked tortilla bowls using extra-large flour tortillas, neutral oil, garlic powder, and salt. The technique involves coating and folding the tortillas into oven-safe bowls before baking them until firm and wavy-edged. The result is a crunchy shell suitable for holding taco salad or other fillings, offering a creative alternative to traditional serving dishes.

Description

Crispy Baked Tortilla Bowls are made by coating large flour tortillas with oil, garlic powder, and salt, then carefully shaping them over deep oven-safe bowls to create molded shells. Baking at 375°F until golden forms a crisp texture with appealing wavy edges caused by delicate folds. The bowls cool on a rack to maintain crispness and prevent sogginess. The garlic seasoning adds a mild savory note that complements fillings like taco salad.

The use of a deep bowl is essential to support the tortilla’s shape during baking, and gentle folds ensure the shell forms without tearing. Once baked and crisp, these bowls provide an interesting vessel for salads, dips, or other ingredients, adding both texture and presentation value.

The recipe encourages experimenting with additional flavorings such as smoked paprika or taco seasoning for varied tastes, and suggests using different flavored tortillas to create unique bowls. Cooling thoroughly is important if storing them to retain crispness for later use.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 flour tortillas extra large
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil
  • garlic powder to taste
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Pour ½ tablespoon of oil in the middle of the tortilla. To the oil, sprinkle some garlic powder and salt. Using your hands or a cooking brush, spread the oil and garlic salt all over the tortilla. Flip and repeat the process. (I used parchment paper to work on)
  3. Grab an oven-safe bowl that fits the tortilla. Slowly put the oiled tortilla in the bowl and gently start making small folds so the tortilla doesn’t break and has wavy edges (see photo for reference).
  4. Place the bowl on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden.
  5. When ready, carefully remove from the oven and remove the tortilla from the bowl. Place it on a cooling rack. It will get soggy if you leave it in the bowl to cool down.
  6. Fill with Taco-Salad and enjoy!

Notes

  • Choose a deep, oven-safe bowl to help the tortilla hold its shape while baking.
  • Fold the tortilla edges gently to avoid tearing and create wavy edges.
  • Cool the baked tortilla bowls on a rack outside the bowl to keep them crisp and prevent sogginess.
  • Flavor variations include substituting or adding spices like smoked paprika, cumin, or taco seasoning.
  • Try using flavored tortillas such as spinach or beet for different colors and flavors.
