Crispy Cheesy Gnocchi
Description
This recipe begins by melting butter and olive oil in a skillet, gently heating minced shallot, garlic, and red pepper flakes until fragrant. The shallot and garlic are set aside briefly while the gnocchi cook over high heat, being stirred and flipped often to develop an evenly crisp and golden crust. After about 5-6 minutes, the aromatics are returned to the pan along with half the Parmesan cheese, tossing gently to coat the gnocchi in the infused butter and cheese.
The final dish has a contrast between the crispy exterior of the gnocchi and their tender, pillowy interior. The Parmesan adds a salty, savory depth, while the red pepper flakes contribute a subtle heat and the fresh basil adds brightness as a garnish. The use of fresh or shelf-stable gnocchi is important, as frozen may change cooking time.
Serve this dish as a snack or side, alone or paired with a salad or protein. It highlights simple ingredients and a straightforward technique to transform gnocchi into a textural treat with rich flavors.
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil DeLallo Private Reserve brand
- 1 pound potato gnocchi DeLallo brand
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 shallot minced
- 6 cloves garlic minced
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
- ½ cup Parmesan Cheese freshly grated
- basil fresh, to garnish
Instructions
- Melt the butter and olive oil in a large skillet. Add shallot, garlic and red pepper flakes to the skillet and heat until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Using a slotted spoon, remove as much of the shallot / garlic from the skillet and set aside (we will add it back later). Leave the infused butter and olive oil in the pan.
- Add gnocchi to the pan and cook on high, stirring frequently for about 5-6 minutes. Flip the gnocchi evenly in the pan for crisp texture on all sides.
- Add the shallot and garlic back to the pan, sprinkle half the parmesan and give a quick stir to coat well. Remove the garlic butter parmesan gnocchi from the pan and serve with remaining grated parmesan and fresh basil.
Notes
- Use fresh or shelf-stable gnocchi, not frozen, to achieve the recommended cooking time and texture.
