Crock Pot Italian Sloppy Joe

Crock Pot Italian Sloppy Joe is a hearty sandwich featuring turkey or chicken sausage cooked with onions, garlic, red and yellow bell peppers, and crushed tomatoes with Italian seasoning. The mixture simmers slowly in a crock pot, melding the flavors over 4 hours. Served on thick Italian bread toasted with garlic and Italian seasoning, and topped with melted mozzarella cheese, this sloppy joe offers a warm, savory meal with a rich tomato base and tender sausage bits.

Description

This Crock Pot Italian Sloppy Joe centers on Italian sausage broken into small bits and cooked with onions, garlic, and colorful bell peppers. The addition of crushed tomatoes and dried rosemary enriches the sauce during the slow cooking process, allowing flavors to blend over several hours. Toasting thick slices of Italian bread with Italian seasoning and garlic before topping them with the sausage mixture and melted mozzarella adds textural contrast and enhances the savory character.

The cooking technique softens the peppers and infuses the sauce with aromatic herbs, while the mozzarella cheese topping melts to create a creamy finish that balances the tomato acidity. Preparing the bread under the broiler with oil and parmesan provides a gently crispy base that holds up well to the saucy topping.

This dish works well as a warm sandwich for lunch or dinner and pairs nicely with simple sides like a fresh salad or steamed vegetables to balance the richness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb turkey sausage removed from casing, Italian or chicken sausage
  • 6 inch thick slices Italian bread (from 1 large loaf (2 oz each))
  • 1/2 cup onion chopped
  • olive oil spray form
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • Italian seasoning to taste, dried, or parsley
  • 1 red bell pepper (chopped in 1/2-inch pieces)
  • 2 tbsp cheese grated
  • 1 yellow bell pepper (chopped in 1/2-inch pieces)
  • garlic cut in half, clove
  • 1 1/3 cups crushed tomatoes (Tuttorosso)
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded, or provolone cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon rosemary dried
  • kosher salt to taste, fresh
  • black pepper to taste, fresh

Instructions

  1. In a medium non-stick skillet, cook the sausage over medium-high heat, breaking up as it cooks into small bits until cooked through, about 5-6 minutes.
  2. Add onions and garlic, and cook another 2 minutes.
  3. Transfer to the slow cooker and add the bell peppers, crushed tomatoes, rosemary and fresh cracked pepper.
  4. Cover and cook on low 4 hours.
  5. Prepare the garlic bread slices. Place 6 slices of the bread on a sheet pan, spray with olive oil, and sprinkle with Italian Seasoning and Parmesan on each side. Spritz with a little more oil and broil about 6 inches from the heating element, until the top of bread is golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes keeping an eye on it. When toasted, remove from oven and rub a garlic clove over the bread.
  6. Top each slice with 1/2 cup meat and add shredded mozzarella, about 2 1/2 tablespoons on each. Place back into the oven for about 1 to 2 minutes or until cheese is melted.
