Ingredients

  • 9 cups French bread day-old cubed
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips or milk chocolate chips
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 4 large egg
  • 12 oz evaporated milk can
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease a medium (4-5 quart) crock pot. 
  2. Add bread to crock pot.
  3. Top with chocolate chips.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together sugars, cocoa powder, eggs, milk, half-and-half, and vanilla. It's ok if it's a little lumpy, but you don't want big piecies of cocoa powder. 
  5. Pour milk mixture over bread, gently pressing bread down as needed.
  6. Place a thin cotton towel over the top of the slow cooker.
  7. Cover, and cook on low for about 3-3 1/2 hours.

  • Cocoa powder: Dutch-processed cocoa powder will also work in this recipe.
  • Evaporated Milk: Skim, 2%, or full-fat will work.
  • Half-and-half: Regular or fat-free will work.
