Croissant Breakfast Sandwich
Description
The Croissant Breakfast Sandwich features freshly sliced bakery croissants as the base, sliced open and spread with mayonnaise for added moisture and stability. Eggs are cooked over-easy to maintain a tender texture, with the option to break the yolk if a less runny consistency is preferred. Cheddar cheese is melted over the hot eggs by placing them back in the pan briefly. Black Forest ham slices are heated until warm, then placed atop the cheese, helping it melt further. The assembled sandwich is served immediately while still piping hot, resulting in a flavorful balance of flaky pastry, creamy eggs, melted cheese, and savory ham.
This sandwich serves well as a hearty start to the day or a weekend brunch option. The combination of textures from the soft croissant and the warm fillings makes it enjoyable to eat by hand. The sandwich is seasoned simply with salt and pepper to enhance its components without overwhelming the delicate flavors.
For ease, flipping eggs with a rubber spatula helps keep the yolks intact if desired. Mayonnaise can be swapped for other condiments like mustard or hot sauce for variation. The sandwich can be made ahead, wrapped tightly, and kept in lunchboxes for a convenient cold or reheated meal later.
Ingredients
- 2 croissants bakery-fresh
- 2 egg
- 2 lices cheddar cheese
- 4 lices Black Forest ham sliced
- mayonnaise to taste
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Cook eggs over-easy (if you don't like runny yolks, break them while they are cooking).
- Place cheese over eggs.
- In the same pan heat up ham slices until they become nice and hot. Place hot ham over the cheese to help the cheese melt.
- Slice croissants in half and spread a little mayonnaise on each side. Place equal portions of the egg/ham on each croissant bottom. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, then add croissant tops.
- Serve immediately. They are the best when they are piping hot.
Notes
- Use a rubber spatula to flip eggs gently to avoid breaking the yolks.
- Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on croissants to keep ingredients moist and in place; other sauces like mustard or hot sauce can be tried.
- Make ahead by wrapping sandwiches tightly in foil for convenient packed lunches.
