Cuban Sandwich Recipe
Description
The Cuban Sandwich Recipe begins by seasoning pork shoulder with salt, cumin, and oregano before browning it with garlic, chili flakes, and onions in a pressure cooker. Citrus juices add flavor while the pork is pressure cooked then naturally released, yielding tender meat. Thin slices of the pork are layered on French bread along with deli-style honey ham, dill pickles, plenty of Swiss cheese, and yellow mustard. The bread is brushed with reserved pork juices to add moisture and flavor. The sandwich is pressed and grilled in a pan with weight applied, melting the cheese and crisping the bread with distinct grill marks. This creates contrasts of tender meat and melty cheese with crunchy toasted bread and the tang from pickles and mustard. It serves as a filling meal with well-balanced components and textures suited for a savory lunch or casual dinner.
Ingredients
For the Pork:
- 1 ½ pounds pork shoulder roast
- 2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon cumin
- 1 tablespoon oregano dried
- 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil
- 5 cloves garlic
- ¼ teaspoon red chili flakes
- ½ yellow onion sliced
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1 lime juiced
For the Sandwiches:
- 4 ounces ham deli sliced, honey flavored
- 6 lices swiss cheese
- ½ cup dill pickles
- ¼ cup yellow mustard
- 8 ounces French bread sliced in half
Instructions
- Cut pork in two and rub with salt, cumin, and oregano.
- Heat oil in a bottom of a pressure cooker set to the saute function. Add the garlic and red chili pepper and cook until fragrant. Add the pork and onions and brown on all sides. Add the orange juice and lime juice, cover, and cook on high pressure for 20 minutes followed by a 15 minutes natural release.
- Slice pork thin and reserve some of the juices. Brush juice on the inside of the bread.
- On the bottom slice of the loaf, layer on 3 slices of cheese, ham, pork, sprinkle with salt and pepper, 3 more slices of cheese, pickles, and spread the mustard on the inside of the top bread loaf. Cut the sandwich in half.
- Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium heat and brush with oil. Place the sandwiches on the pan and place another heavy pan on top to weigh it down. Cook on both sides for 6-7 minutes until cheese is melted and grill marks form on bread. Serve immediately.
