Cuban Sloppy Joes

Cuban Sloppy Joes use ground pork cooked with garlic and a fragrant blend of spices like allspice, coriander, and paprika, simmered in tomato sauce and chicken stock with lime zest and juice. The saucy pork mixture is served on toasted brioche buns topped with Swiss cheese and pickles. This sandwich offers bold, tangy, spiced flavors and a juicy texture that distinguishes it from typical sloppy joe recipes.

Description

This Cuban Sloppy Joe recipe starts by browning ground pork in oil, then adding garlic, brown sugar, allspice, coriander, kosher salt, black pepper, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and fresh lime zest and juice. The combination results in a spiced, aromatic base with the sweet undertone of brown sugar balanced by citrus brightness.

Chicken stock and tomato sauce are then stirred in, and the mixture simmers to reduce slightly, concentrating the flavors into a thick, saucy filling. The pork remains juicy yet well-coated by the melded spices and tomato base.

To serve, the pork mixture is piled onto toasted brioche buns, which add a soft, slightly sweet foundation. Swiss cheese slices melt atop, complementing the savory pork, and sliced pickles provide a crunchy, tangy contrast. Mustard is optional depending on preferred tartness. This sandwich pairs well with casual meals or quick dinners when you want a hearty yet distinctively spiced sloppy joe.
