Cubanos (Cuban Sandwich Recipe)
Description
This recipe starts with slicing a loaf of Cuban, French, or Italian bread, spreading yellow mustard on the cut sides. Layers of thinly sliced ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, and pickles are stacked inside before covering with the top half of the bread. Butter is spread on both outer sides of the sandwich. Grilling on a panini press or a skillet pressed with weight crisps the bread and melts the cheese over several minutes per side.
The finished Cubanos offer a balance of textures: a crunchy toasted crust, tender deli-style meats, creamy melted cheese, and crisp pickles providing acidic contrast. This sandwich is often cut into smaller sections for easy sharing or serving.
Leftover sandwiches can be refrigerated wrapped tightly, eaten cold, or reheated in the microwave or oven. Freezing is possible for longer storage, with thawing recommended before reheating to ensure even warming and preserve texture.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf bread or French or Italian bread, Cuban
- 3 Tablespoons yellow mustard
- 1/2 pound ham baked, thinly sliced
- 3/4 pound pork or store-bought pork roast, shredded or sliced, Cuban Mojo
- 8 ounces swiss cheese sliced
- dill pickles enough to cover each sandwich, sliced
- 4 Tablespoons butter softened, salted
Instructions
- Slice the loaf of bread in half horizontally. Spread the mustard on the cut side of the bread, then layer the sandwich with sliced ham on the bottom, then the roast pork, followed by the swiss cheese and pickles. Top with the other half of the loaf of bread and cut into 4 smaller sandwiches for easy grilling.
- Brush the top and bottom of the sandwiches with the softened butter. Then grill the sandwiches on a panini press, griddle, or in a frying pan using a heavy skillet to press down the sandwich. You might even want to add a heavy can of beans or something to the skillet to make sure the sandwich is being pressed well.
- Cook until toasted (around 3 minutes), then flip and continue to cook on the other side for another 2-3 minutes. The exterior of the sandwich should be golden brown and crisp while the cheese inside is melted and the meat is hot.
- Slice each Cuban sandwich in half and serve.
Notes
- Wrap leftover sandwiches tightly in plastic wrap or foil to store in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days.
- Sandwiches can be eaten cold or reheated in a microwave or 350ºF oven until warmed through.
- Freeze assembled sandwiches for up to 3 months, wrapped well; thaw in the refrigerator before reheating for best results.
