Deviled Strawberries
Description
The Deviled Strawberries recipe uses large strawberry halves as a natural vessel for a creamy filling made primarily from softened cream cheese blended with sugar, vanilla, and lemon juice. Whipped heavy cream is folded in to lighten the texture, contributing a fluffy, airy feel to the filling. The strawberries' natural juiciness combined with the sweet, smooth filling creates a pleasant balance of flavors and textures. A finishing sprinkle of crumbs adds a subtle crispness contrasting the soft topping.
The preparation involves slicing fresh strawberries in half and optionally stabilizing them to sit flat by trimming the back. The cream cheese mixture is piped onto the fruit for an attractive presentation. This dish is best served immediately to maintain the freshness and texture, as refrigerated storage up to two days is possible but may affect quality.
This treat offers a light, fresh option that can be enjoyed as a snack or dessert. Its straightforward assembly and no-bake nature make it accessible for home cooks wanting a straightforward yet distinctive dish using simple ingredients.
Ingredients
- 24 strawberry cut in half, large
- 8 ounces cream cheese softened, 225g package
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- ¼ teaspoon lemon juice
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cup heavy whipping cream 360g
Instructions
To Make From Scratch
- Beat together softened cream cheese, sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla in a medium sized mixing bowl using an electric mixer, until combined and smooth. You can also do this in a stand mixer.
- In a separate bowl, beat the whipping cream until it forms stiff peaks.
- Fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture until fully combined, then add into a piping bag with your preferred nozzle. My kids prefer the star tip.
- Slice strawberries in half and place on a plate. If strawberries don't sit straight, you can slice a little bit of the back to position them.
- Pipe the cream cheese mixture onto the sliced strawberry halves.
- Sprinkle on some shortbread crumbs or graham cracker crumbs, then serve the filled strawberries immediately.
To Make With Store-bought Ingredients
- Slice strawberries in half and place on a plate. If strawberries don't sit straight, you can slice a little bit of the back to position them.
- Spoon or pipe your favorite ready-made filling (cream cheese frosting, whipped cream, Nutella) onto the sliced strawberry halves.
- Sprinkle on shortbread cookie crumbs or graham cracker crumbs, then serve immediately.
Notes
- Use large, fresh strawberries for easier handling and better presentation.
- If strawberries do not sit flat, slice a small piece off the back to stabilize them on the serving plate.
- Optionally hollow out strawberries to create a cavity for filling using a small melon baller or knife.
- Prepare and fill strawberries just before serving for best texture and flavor; can be refrigerated up to 2 days.
- Frozen strawberries are not suitable for this recipe due to texture changes.
