Dirt Cake Recipe
Description
This Dirt Cake starts with instant chocolate pudding mixed with chilled milk and whipped topping, forming a rich and light chocolate mousse base. Separately, cream cheese and butter are creamed together with powdered sugar until smooth and fluffy. The pudding mixture is folded into the cream cheese blend, producing a creamy, sweet filling.
The dessert is typically assembled by layering the cream mixture and crushed Oreo cookies repeatedly in individual cups or a large pan, with gummy worms added on top for a playful decoration reminiscent of “dirt.” The crushed Oreos add crunch and chocolate flavor contrast to the creamy layers.
Dirt Cake is served chilled, allowing the layers to set with a soft, spoonable texture. Its composition brings together sweet, creamy, chocolate, and slightly tangy cream cheese notes with cookie crunch and gummy sweetness in each bite.
Storing it in the refrigerator keeps the texture consistent and freshness for up to three days. It can be prepared in individual servings or a 9x13 pan depending on preference.
Ingredients
- 3.9 ounces instant chocolate pudding mix (1 box)
- 2 cups milk chilled, whole
- 8 ounces whipped topping thawed, such as Cool Whip
- ¼ cup butter room temperature (½ stick, unsalted
- 8 ounces cream cheese room temperature (1 brick)
- 1 cup powdered sugar sifted
- 16 ounces Oreo cookies crushed (about 40 cookies)
- 24 gummy worms
Instructions
- Mix the instant pudding mix with the milk according to package directions. Allow to set for 5 minutes. Once set, fold in the whipped topping.
- Using a hand or stand mixer, cream the butter and cream cheese together. Add the powdered sugar and mix until light and airy.
- Add the pudding mixture to the cream cheese mixture. Stir well.
- Transfer the mixture to a large Ziplock bag. Cut off one of the corners of the bag to easily fill the cups.
- Working in layers, pipe some of the cream mixture into the bottom of each cup. Add a layer of crushed cookies. Pipe another layer of the cream mixture on top. Garnish with more cookies and gummy worms. Serve chilled and enjoy.
Notes
- Store assembled dirt cake cups in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- This dessert can also be made in a 9x13-inch pan instead of individual cups for easier serving.
