Dirt Cake Recipe
Description
Dirt Cake is assembled by creating a crushed Oreo cookie crust and topping, sandwiching a rich cream cheese and pudding-based filling. The filling blends softened cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, whipped topping, and prepared instant pudding for a smooth, sweet layer that contrasts with the crunchy cookie crumbs. Chilling the assembled dish allows it to set, melding the textures.
The dessert is often presented with candy worms for visual effect but can also be made with chocolate pudding for a deeper chocolate taste. It is served cold and is suitable for potlucks or casual gatherings where a fun-themed dessert is desired.
Prepare components in advance by crushing Oreos and making filling up to 24 hours ahead, storing them separately in sealed containers. Assemble just before serving to retain texture. The recipe can be adapted to individual servings by layering ingredients in cups.
Ingredients
- 1 (14.3-ounce) package Oreo cookies
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese softened
- ½ cup unsalted butter softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 (16-ounce) tub whipped topping or 4 cups whipped cream
- 2 (3.4-ounce) boxes INSTANT white chocolate pudding or vanilla pudding
- 3 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Crush all the Oreos in a large resealable plastic bag or in the food processor until they are crumbs. Press two-thirds of the crushed cookies into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside. Reserve the remaining crushed Oreos.
- In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and butter with a hand mixer until smooth. Mix in powdered sugar. Fold in whipped topping until well combined and set aside.
- In a separate bowl, mix pudding, milk, and vanilla. Let sit until thickened. Fold this mixture into the cream cheese mixture.
- Carefully pour the pudding/cream cheese mixture over the crumb crust in the pan.
- Sprinkle with the reserved crushed Oreos. Refrigerate for 3-4 hours before serving.
Notes
- Oreos can be crushed and stored in a sealed bag to keep fresh for up to 24 hours before use.
- The filling can be made in advance and refrigerated to simplify assembly on serving day.
- Use chocolate pudding instead of white chocolate pudding for a more chocolate-forward flavor and to enhance the "dirt" appearance.
- Adding candy worms or gummy worms on top creates a fun disguise resembling soil.
- Individual cups can be assembled by layering crumbs, filling, and toppings for portion control and presentation.
