Dirt Cookies

Dirt Cookies are rich cocoa cookies softened with cream cheese frosting mixed with Oreo crumbs to provide a textured, flavorful topping resembling "dirt." The base cookie dough incorporates cocoa powder and both granulated and brown sugars for depth. Flattening the cookies slightly before baking creates an even surface for smooth frosting application. Gummy worms complete the playful presentation.

Description

The Dirt Cookies recipe combines creamed butter and sugars with eggs and vanilla before blending in flour, cocoa, and leaveners to form a chocolate cookie dough. Portioning and baking at 350°F produces soft-centered cookies with a balanced chocolate flavor. The cookies are pressed flat after baking to create a smooth canvas for decoration.

The frosting blends full-fat cream cheese and butter with powdered sugar and cocoa powder to create a rich, creamy topping. Crumbled Oreo cookies folded into the frosting add a crumbly texture and intensify the chocolate taste, mimicking soil. Decorating with gummy worms furthers a playful "dirt" theme suitable for kids or themed parties.

Storing in an airtight container helps retain freshness. The recipe's detailed steps guide achieving the right cookie texture and frosting consistency, ensuring a distinctive treat with both soft cookies and creamy, crumbly topping.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup butter softened, unsalted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup light brown sugar firmly packed
  • 1 egg room temperature preferred, plus 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder natural
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon salt

Frosting

  • 6 oz cream cheese
  • 6 Tablespoons butter softened, unsalted
  • ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • teaspoon salt
  • 2 ⅔ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup cocoa powder natural
  • 6 Oreo cookies pulverized to fine crumbs
  • gummy worms for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F (175C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream butter and sugars together until creamy and well combined.
  3. Add egg, egg yolk, and vanilla extract and stir until combined.
  4. In a separate, medium-sized bowl whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, stirring until completely combined.
  6. Scoop cookie dough by 2 Tablespoon-sized scoops and roll between your palms to make a smooth ball. Place on baking sheet, spacing cookies at least 2” (5cm) apart and bake in 350F (175C) oven for 10-11 minutes.
  7. Within one minute of removing cookies from the oven, gently flatten the surface of the cookie using a 1-cup measuring cup (this will give you a smooth surface for decorating the cookie). While cookies are cooling, prepare your frosting.

For the frosting

  1. Combine cream cheese and butter in a large mixing bowl and use an electric mixer to beat until smooth and creamy.
  2. Add vanilla extract and salt, stir until combined.
  3. With mixer on low speed, gradually add powdered sugar until completely combined.
  4. Add cocoa powder and stir until completely incorporated and frosting is uniform.

Assembly

  1. Spread or pipe frosting onto cooled cookies (I like to use a piping bag fitted with an open tip to pipe the frosting then smooth it with an offset spatula).
  2. Sprinkle cookie crumbs evenly over the frosting then gently nestle 1-2 gummy worms on top of the frosting. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use full-fat brick-style cream cheese rather than spreadable varieties for best frosting texture and flavor.
  • Store finished cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 24 hours or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
