Dutch Apple Pie

Dutch Apple Pie features a golden pie crust filled with a spiced apple mixture, topped with a crumbly streusel made from cold butter, flour, and brown sugar. The streusel melts and browns during baking, providing a crunchy, sweet topping that contrasts with the tender cooked apples beneath. This pie offers a classic homemade dessert with a balance of sweet and buttery textures.

Description

This Dutch Apple Pie starts with a prepared pie crust fitted into a 9-inch pie plate. A homemade or store-bought apple pie filling is poured into the crust. The topping, a streusel mixture of cold cubed butter, all-purpose flour, and packed brown sugar, is cut together into coarse crumbs and sprinkled evenly over the filling.

The pie bakes at 400 degrees F for 45 to 50 minutes until the crust edges and streusel topping turn deep golden brown and crisp. Cooling for at least 20 minutes ensures the filling sets before serving. The result highlights a contrast between the soft, warmly spiced apples and the crumbly, sweet topping.

This dessert is ideal served slightly warm, optionally paired with ice cream, emphasizing the buttery streusel topping's texture and sweetness alongside the tender fruit.

For best streusel texture, use butter straight from the refrigerator and do not overwork the mixture to keep the crumbs distinct. The pie can be made a couple of days in advance and refrigerated to meld flavors.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pie crust homemade or store bought
  • 1 recipe apple pie filling
  • 1/2 cup butter cut into cubes, cold
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar packed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple pie filling according to recipe instructions. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Place a 9 inch pie plate on a sheet pan. Fit the pie crust into the pan, fluting the edges of the crust. Alternatively, you can use a frozen pie crust that's already in a pan (no need to thaw it).
  3. Pour the pie filling into the crust.
  4. Place the butter, flour and brown sugar in a bowl. Use two forks or a pastry blender to cut the butter into the flour and sugar until coarse crumbs form.
  5. Sprinkle the crumb mixture over the pie.
  6. Bake the pie for 45-50 minutes, or until crust and topping are deep golden brown. Cool for at least 20 minutes, then serve.

Notes

  • Prepare the pie up to two days before serving to allow flavors to develop.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream for added richness.
  • Keep butter cold when making the streusel topping to form coarse crumbs, which bake into a crisp texture.
