Dutch Apple Pie Recipe

The Dutch Apple Pie features a flaky pie crust filled with thinly sliced apples tossed in sugars, flour, and cinnamon, topped with a crumbly mixture of butter, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. This combination yields a dessert with tender, cinnamon-spiced apples under a golden, crisp streusel topping.

Description

Using peeled, thinly sliced apples coated in a mix of granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon creates a well-spiced filling that thickens during baking. The pie crust serves as a sturdy base providing a crisp edge. The crumble topping, made from cold butter cut into flour, sugars, and cinnamon, offers a buttery, crunchy contrast to the soft apples. Baking the pie at 375°F allows the filling to bubble and the topping to brown evenly.

This pie can be served warm or cooled, making it a comforting dessert for fall or year-round. It pairs well with whipped cream or ice cream to complement its cinnamon and buttery notes.

Ingredients

Servings

Pie Crust

  • 1 pie crust made ahead

Apple Pie Filling

  • 2 lbs apple
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Crumble Topping

  • 6 tbsp butter cold, unsalted
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Adjust the rack to the lowest position. In a medium bowl, mix the crumble topping ingredients together with a fork or pastry cutter until crumbs form. Place in fridge to chill.
  2. Peel and thinly slice the apples (⅛ to ¼-inch thick) and place them in a large bowl. Add in the flour, sugars, cinnamon and toss with apples until evenly coated.
  3. Roll out a prepared pie crust into a 12 inch circle. Transfer the crust to a 9-inch pie pan or round baking dish, and crimp or trim the edges. Spread the apples over the crust-lined pie plate.
  4. Sprinkle the crumble topping on evenly.
  5. Bake the pie for 50-60 minutes, or until the crumble topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling. Allow the pie to set for at least 10 minutes before serving, or until it cools completely (3-5 hours). Enjoy!
