Easy 4 Ingredient Rum Balls
Description
Easy 4 Ingredient Rum Balls combine crushed whole Oreo cookies and chopped walnuts with heavy cream and dark rum to create a moist, pliable mixture. The heavy cream helps bind the crumbs and nuts together while the rum adds a depth of flavor and a gentle alcoholic warmth. The walnuts remain slightly chunky for texture contrast against the smooth cookie crumb base.
Once combined, the mixture is rolled into small balls and may be coated in sprinkles or coconut flakes to add visual appeal and slight variations in texture. Chilling the rum balls for at least two days allows the flavors to meld and the balls to firm up for easy handling and serving.
This recipe requires minimal ingredients and no baking, making it suitable for preparing ahead before gatherings or for a simple homemade confection. Adjust the rum quantity for desired firmness or opt for alcohol-free by substituting rum extract and adding more cream. The resulting rum balls are rich, slightly boozy, and sweet with a familiar cookie flavor.
Ingredients
- 3 cups Oreo cookies whole cookies including the middles, crushed
- 1 ½ cups walnut finely chopped
- 3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- ¼ to ⅓ cup dark rum
Optional Coatings
- Sprinkles cocoa powder
- coconut flakes chopped nuts
Instructions
- Pulse Oreos in a food processor until you have 3 cups. Set aside.
- Pulse walnuts in a food processor until you have 1 ½ cups.
- Combine crushed Oreos, walnuts, cream in a medium bowl and mix well.
- Add rum starting with ¼ cup and adding more if needed to create a consistency that holds its shape when rolled. (If you add too much and they are too soft, add in more cookie crumbs to get desired consistency, note that the crumbs do soak up the liquids as they sit).
- Using a small scoop (or melon baller) scoop dough and roll into balls.
- Roll in sprinkles. Refrigerate 2 days before serving.
Notes
- Use dark rum as it provides the best flavor profile for these rum balls.
- Ensure walnuts are chopped finely but still retain small chunks to maintain texture.
- To make an alcohol-free version, substitute rum with 1 teaspoon vanilla or rum extract and add extra cream if needed.
- If the mixture feels too soft, incorporate extra crushed cookies to adjust firmness before rolling.
- When coating with sprinkles, work in small batches to ensure they adhere properly without becoming oily.
