Easy Apple Crisp
Description
In this Apple Crisp recipe, peeled and chopped apples are combined with granulated sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon, then placed in a greased baking dish. The topping is made from rolled oats, all-purpose flour, packed brown sugar, finely chopped pecans, cinnamon, salt, and diced cold unsalted butter. The butter is cut into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
The topping is sprinkled evenly over the apple mixture, and the assembled dish is baked at 375°F until the topping turns golden brown and the apple filling bubbles, approximately 35 to 40 minutes. The baked apples become tender and mildly tart, while the pecan-oat topping adds a sweet, crunchy texture that complements the softness below.
This apple crisp is best served warm, with an optional scoop of vanilla ice cream to add creaminess that contrasts with the crisp topping. It makes a comforting dessert suitable for year-round enjoyment but especially popular in cooler months.
Leftovers store well for several days refrigerated and can be frozen up to three months wrapped tightly. The topping can be prepared ahead but mixing in the butter just before baking yields the best texture. Substitutions like oat or gluten-free flours and nut alternatives can be used to adapt the recipe.
Ingredients
Apple Filling
- 6 apple peeled and chopped
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Crisp Topping
- ¾ cup rolled oats
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup light brown sugar packed
- ½ cup pecan finely chopped
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup butter diced cold, unsalted
- vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease an 8-inch square baking dish or 7-inch x 11-inch baking dish.
- Place the apples into the greased baking dish; add the sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon on top, stir and set aside.
- In a small bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, pecans, cinnamon and salt. Cut in butter using a fork or your hands until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the crisp topping mixture over the apple mixture.
- Bake until the crisp topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly, about 35-40 minutes. Allow to cool for a few minutes. Serve warm with a scoop of ice cream, if desired.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
- After baking and cooling, this apple crisp can be frozen for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating at 375°F for 15-20 minutes.
- The crisp topping can be prepared ahead of time, but add butter just before baking to maintain the desired texture.
- Flour substitutions such as almond flour, gluten-free flour, or oat flour work well; vegan butter or coconut oil can replace butter if needed.
- Pecans in the topping can be omitted or substituted with walnuts or almonds based on preference.
