Easy Apple Crisp

Easy Apple Crisp features a filling of peeled and sliced firm apples tossed with brown sugar, lemon juice, and warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. The topping blends flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, butter, and toasted pecans, creating a crumbly, slightly crunchy layer that bakes to golden perfection. The dish offers a tender, warmly spiced apple interior combined with a crisp topping, ideal served warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream.

Description

Easy Apple Crisp begins with peeled, sliced Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples coated in a mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, lemon juice, and lemon zest. These apples provide a balance of tart and sweet, which softens during baking. The topping combines flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, cold butter, and toasted pecans. The butter is cut into the dry ingredients to create a crumbly texture, which crisps while baking, offering a nutty, buttery crust contrasting the soft fruit below.

The crisp is baked until the topping turns golden and the apple filling bubbles gently at the edges, ensuring the apples are tender but hold some structure. Serving the crisp warm highlights the comforting spice mix and buttery topping, especially when paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to add creamy contrast. It is a good dessert for seasonal gatherings or whenever a rich baked fruit dessert is desired.

The recipe suggests checking the topping halfway through baking to prevent over-browning and allowing it to cool to room temperature afterward; this helps the filling thicken. Leftovers can be covered and refrigerated. Reheating can be done gently in the oven to maintain crisp topping texture.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Topping:

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup rolled oats old fashioned
  • ¾ cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • tsp table salt
  • ½ cup butter sliced cold, salted
  • ¼ cup pecans toasted

For the Filling:

  • 2 ½ lbs apple recommend firm granny smith and honeycrisp apples, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch thick pieces
  • lemon a little under 1/4 cup juice, zest and juice of 1 large lemon
  • ½ cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp cloves ground
  • vanilla ice cream optional

Instructions

  1. Butter a 8x8 baking dish. Preheat oven to 350F with rack on middle position.
  2. In a bowl, combine all topping ingredients except butter. Stir to combine well. Using a pastry cutter, cut cold butter into the ingredients until mixture is crumbly, resembling wet sand with little clumps of butter still intact. (If your fingers are cool, it's easier to mix with clean hands.) Cover and chill while you prepare the filling.
  3. In a large bowl, combine all filling ingredients and toss to incorporate. Pour into buttered baking dish. Scatter cold topping evenly over the apples.
  4. Place baking dish on a large baking sheet. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes, check the topping, and cover loosely with foil if it's already browning.  Continue baking another 15-20 minutes, or just until topping is nicely browned and edges are bubbling. Let cool to room temperature, to allow filling to thicken. Cover leftovers and store in fridge.
